Communication is critical in our daily interaction with people yet it is often being neglected. In my opinion, there are several reasons why we need to communicate effectively.
Conveying a message clearly and unambiguously is important especially to students like us. In NUS, I am actively involved in co-curriculum activities (CCA) and academic group projects which would require good interpersonal communication skills. Honestly, the lack of effective communication skills has hindered my contribution to group projects and CCA. Misunderstanding of messages has caused several serious setbacks such as project delay. Therefore, effective communication will be a crucial skill for me in order to complete a group project or assignment efficiently and correctly.
Next, bad communication skills could result in conflicts especially between friends and couple. For instance, a speaker who is not able to communicate effectively could make the receiver felt offended and thus trigger a conflict. I did experience quite a number of arguments in the past with friends or family members which were due to communication problems. It took certain period of time to get the relationship back to recover.
Finally, effective communication skill is vital so as to excel in future career. In today highly competitive environment, an excellent academic result will not be adequate to lend you a hand in career development. What is most crucial is the ability to communicate effectively so as to express and promote you to your boss or interviewer. Besides helping us to secure a position in company, outstanding communication skills could also help to build up rapport with colleagues and higher administrative officers.
In conclusion, communication is essential in daily life and it should not be ignored. In my opinion, it will be one of the most vital elements which could determine my achievement in life. That's the main reason why I am taking Es2007S; to learn how to communicate professionally.
Hi Seehon, it's a good thing to know your weaknesses and mistakes so that you can learn and improve in due time. Although your blog post does not contain examples of such conflicts or misunderstanding, I hope you can try to recall those past events and think through about how you could improve on what you did, as well as how you could communicate better so as to get a more favourable outcome. And while hindsight is important for learning, foresight is also essential in order to apply what you have learnt so as to avoid making the same mistakes. Ultimately, it is what you learn outside the classroom and not in the classroom that contributes to most of your learning and personal development.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Masamune, that reading and discussing communication in the classroom is no substitute for learning to improve interpersonal relations in one's daily life. It is good that you have reflected on your past experiences/conflicts and considered how you could have dealt with them better. This is the first step towards gaining control of your future communications.

Like what the previous comments have said, knowing what you lack in is the first step in changing and turnng more successful. People always make mistakes but the most respectable kind of people are those who aknowledge their mistakes and learn from them.
ReplyDeleteHi See Hon, great job in explaining the importance of effective communication in different aspects of our daily life. I agree with Masamune that you can improve by giving concrete examples of arguments with your friends or family members that were due to communication problems.
ReplyDeleteI think that your post is very clear, and understanding of your message is easy. One area of improvement could be to include examples so that there is concreteness. That said, you may want to choose the appropriate examples to avoid compromising the identities of your friends and situation.
